Umm...yeah. We have a new place already.
It's in Sundance, which is a subdivision from the 90's, in the deep south. Not convenient to vicki, sadly. But technically, it's the same amount of time to drive. And everything else just seemed too perfect.
It's 2000 sq ft, three bedrooms, with an eat in kitchen, family room, living/dining room, fenced yard with deck, a home office, and a nook upstairs big enough for a bookshelf and reading chair. You can SEE John's new school from the back deck. It's like a block away. How perfect is that, Mom? As for Joan? there's one school location a 5-minute drive - on the other side of Sundance. Another is in the next neighbourhood over, in Midnapore - about a 7 min drive away. Hopefully, between the two of them, she can snag a spot. You better believe I'll be calling first thing Monday!
Unfortunately, they didn't put any pictures in the listing online, so I can't show it to you yet. But we take posession April 1, as long as we deliver them a letter proving that Mike is gainfully employed, so we'll take some then. But it is lovely - very bright and sunny. Usually, there's more to the selection process, but for some reason, they didn't bother with us. I guess we look trustworthy - and he liked that we had kids going to the school (we're more inclined to stay a while).

We're happy that you have a new house, just a little sad that it means that we can't come over to visit or help out as a result that's all. Public transit here is interesting to say the least and it's going to be a long time before we can afford a car.
We'll try to help out with the move when you need it, just keep us informed.

oh, Vic, you can still come! we live just a short walk from an LRT station. or we can come see you - you're straight up the deerfoot. Until we saw this one, our number one pick was actually just a 5-minute drive away from you. But I think we made the right choice. It was a cute house, surrounded by young families. But it was a rougher neighbourhood - there were beer and liquor bottles lying around, and it backed onto a pipeline right of way, with a footpath over it. At first, we thought it was a plus. But it was actually keeping me awake at night, thinking who was walking down that path at night. Both kids would need to be bussed a long distancew to school, which Mike thought was great, but not what I wanted. This place has schools for both kids nearby - within walking distance. It has a little TOO much room for my taste - as the person who has to clean it - but it supposedly has a central vacuum, so it hopefully won't be too bad. And it's ideal for Mike's work. They actually preferred for him to move to the south - they don't have a single employee living in the neighbouring central office juristiction, so he will now get all those jobs. it means working on new homes non-stop, which he's really excited about. And it's just a block from Fish Creek provincial park, which is an awesome greenspace - like nose hill, only flat, with a creek in it. Lots of roaming room for little kids. I don't know - it has lots going for it. I'm not nervous about this neighbourhood. we saw several, and none were perfect. but mike figured we'd walk into one and just know it was "the one." and we definitely got that feeling there. Even John was smitten - we were on the deck, discussing privately, when out barged John, who had seen all the houses. He threw his arms up and pronounced "well, I think we've found the perfect house for us!"
I hope we made the right choice. don't worry about sending Alice, Bruce - we have at least a month to move! Should be relatively pain-free. We've been discussing this a long, long time, so it all moved kind of quick once the final decision was made to go. But we've been discussing it a long time, and keeping an eye on the rental prices.
We've already gotten flak for going with something much larger, and I feel I need to address that. We're a family of five, and counting - we need space. We tried small, and it was great as a family of four. But now the kids are older, and more active, and we have an extra body. We're considered a fairly large family by today's standards. And the recession has definitely put a glut of nice homes on the rental market - we just took advantage of it. A year ago, this would be WAY out of our price range. The van is not a luxury, and neither is extra square footage and a fenced yard. kids themselves don't cost much, but housing them and carting them around does - we'd love to live in a tiny cheap place. But we have three busy little people to consider.
anyway, that's my rant. feeling a little stressed, i guess. sigh. anyway, better go - david needs to be fed.

well, Bruce, the kids would definitely be delighted if you did, but I still think we'll muddle through ok either way. Though, we should discuss summer soon - john has decided he wants to head to dryden as soon as school is out - and stay until it gets back in!
Not sure how we feel about that. Did I mention this community has a ton of kids' programs at the community centre, and a man-made lake/beach in the middle? In theory, we could take the kids swimming every day this summer. So we might want to pare that holiday down just a tad. We'll have to discuss it.

Summer is a LONG way off, and John isn't the person calling the shots - that's his Mom's call.
The move will be spectacular and planning an 'overlap' is a good way to do it. We had over a month between the apartment and the house and it gave us a chance to clean, paint a little and haul a box or two every time we went back and forth. As long as you're both involved, it'll be a snap.
